'The History of Ashanti Kings and the whole country itself' (HAK). The core of this document is a genealogical history of the Kumase dynasty that ruled over Asante. In recording his descent since the seventeenth century Agyeman Prempeh, thinking that he might never see home, family and kin again, was fulfilling as best he could one of the most fundamentally important injunctions in Asante life. To situate oneself in a listing of ancestral names - 'may my name never be lost' (me din nyera da) - was to assert membership in Asante history, an identity and belonging that linked together the worlds of the dead, the living and the unborn’.
