*Johannesburg erupts in applause as Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings makes history in the Pan African Parliament chamber* The gavel had barely fallen before the room broke into a sustained ovation. By 131 to 51, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has secured the role of 2nd Deputy President of the Pan African Parliament, becoming the first woman from the West African Caucus to hold the position since the institution was established in 2004. The 2nd Deputy President functions as the equivalent of a 2nd Deputy Speaker. In practice, that puts Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings on the Parliament’s presiding bureau alongside the President and two other deputies. She will help set the legislative agenda, chair sessions when the President is absent, and oversee committee coordination across the 55 African Union member states represented in Midrand, Johannesburg. The position carries weight in shaping policy debates on trade, peace and security, and regional integration. For decades, the West African bloc h

Majority Caucus Defends BoG Over GH¢15.6 Billion Operating Cost The Majority Caucus in Parliament has defended the Bank of Ghana over its reported GH¢15.6 billion operating cost for 2025, insisting that the expenditure does not affect the central bank’s core mandate of regulating Ghana’s economy. Addressing a press conference in Accra parliament on Thursday, the Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu, Issah Atta, stated that the authority of the central bank is grounded in law and not determined by the strength of its balance sheet. According to him, central banks across the world have recorded losses while still maintaining effective control over inflation and economic stability. He cited the European Central Bank, which reported losses in 2023 and 2024, as well as the Federal Reserve System in the United States, which has faced continuous income shortfalls since September 2022. The MP also referenced the Czech National Bank, noting that it operated with negative equity for 17 consecu

MP Calls for Deeper Reforms in Energy Sector, Not Leadership Changes The Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has pushed back against calls for the removal of top energy sector officials, describing such actions as misplaced and ineffective. Speaking at a press briefing, the MP criticized demands for the dismissal of the CEO of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the reshuffling of leadership within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region. According to him, Ghana’s ongoing electricity challenges are rooted not in individual leadership failures, but in deeper financial and policy constraints affecting the sector.“Calling for resignations may generate headlines, but it will not generate electricity,” he stated. He highlighted key issues including chronic underfunding, unresolved obligations to Independent Power Producers, and deferred maintenance across the sector—factors he says have worsened since early 2025. LGBTQ BILL: SPONSORS DEMAND SPEEDY PASSAGE OF THE BILL. Some sponsors of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values often called "anti-LGBTQ bills, Mr Sam Nartey George and Mr Ntim Fordjour are calling for speedy passage of the bill. According to them, the core clauses haven't changed much and it doesn't need fresh national dialogue because the stakeholders inputs from the office of the Chief Imam, Christian Council, Catholic Bishop Conference, National House of Chiefs and the Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values were already captured during the 2021-2024 process. He added that, the issues raised now in 2026 are the same as those addressed then. They appealed to leadership to treat it as such given that, it already survived legal challenges in the Supreme Court and extensive committee scrutiny in the 8th parliament. Mr Ntim Fordjour added that, the Constitutional, legal and Parliamentary Affairs committee now has to file a report, after that, the bill

Minority Caucus Warns Against “Operational Paralysis” of OSP After Court Ruling The Minority Caucus in Parliament has cautioned against what it describes as an attempt to “operationally paralyze” the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) following a recent High Court ruling. Speaking to the press, Alhassan Tampuli Sulemana, Member of Parliament for Gushegu and Deputy Ranking Member on the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, strongly opposed the decision, which questions the OSP’s independent prosecutorial authority. Hon. Sulemana challenged the legal basis of the ruling, which directs the Attorney General's Department to take over cases initiated by the OSP. He argued that the decision is inappropriate, particularly as similar matters are currently before the Supreme Court of Ghana. He described the move as a “judicial rascality,” stressing that a lower court should not interfere in issues pending before the country’s highest court. The Minority reaffirmed

Minority Caucus Demands Full Independence for OSP, Challenges High Court Ruling The Minority Caucus in Parliament, led by Alhassan Tampuli Sulemana, has called for the protection of the autonomy of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), describing a recent High Court ruling as a threat to its independence. Addressing the media in Parliament, Hon. Sulemana, who serves as Deputy Ranking Member on the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, expressed concern over a decision directing the Attorney General's Department to take over prosecutions initiated by the OSP. Hon. Sulemana questioned the basis of the ruling, arguing that a lower court should not interfere in matters already pending before the Supreme Court of Ghana. “Can a subordinate court preempt the highest court of the land when a similar matter is already before it?” he asked, describing the decision as inappropriate and legally questionable. The Minority maintained that, Act 959, which established the OSP, remains

Dawenya Police Accused of Endangering Lives, Forcing Illegal Towing Fee A group of passengers, including journalists, have accused officers of the Dawenya Divisional Police Command of endangering lives and engaging in extortion after a commercial minibus was forcibly towed with occupants still on board. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, March 28, 2026, involved a minibus travelling from Accra to Akatsi South. According to both the driver and passengers, the vehicle was part of a convoy reportedly including a military pickup attempting to navigate heavy traffic at Dawenya. Eyewitness accounts indicate that while several vehicles within the convoy were allowed to pass, a police inspector identified as Gyan allegedly stopped the minibus despite repeated explanations from passengers that they were moving together. Passengers say the situation escalated when the officer called in a tow truck and ordered the vehicle to be towed to the police station without first asking occupants
