REDEEM YOUR  PLEDGE AND PAY FARMERS THE PROMISED 70%-MINORITY CALLS  OUT TO GOVERNMENT.

The NPP minority caucus are calling on the Mahama government to take immediate steps to redeem their  pledge and pay cocoa farmers the promised 70% of the world market price, which equals $7,700/ton or €170,500/tons made them.

Speaking to the press, MP for Offinso South, Dr  Issac Yaw Opoku recalled that in the run-up to the Dec 7th Presidential and Parliamentary elections, the then opposition members of the NDC led by Hon Eric Opoku, then ranking member for Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs Committee of Parliament (now Minister for Agriculture) and Hon Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader then (now Minister for Finance) informed Ghanaians that cocoa farmers were being shortchanged on price and that COCOBOD was cheating farmers big time.

Mr. Yaw Opoku further  explained that the opposition NDC then continuously insisted during the 2024 election year that farmers were entitled to 2/3rds of the world price, which worked out to be c6,250/bag of 64 kilos.

Therefore, the then NPP Government and COCOBOD should have paid farmers more than ¢6,000/bag, and not ¢3,000/bag…. Cue… in…. Voice

Today, he disclosed that the world market price of cocoa has continued to rally and spiked even higher than before.

For the greater part of this year 2025, the price of cocoa has exceeded $11,000/ton.

The Offinso legislator hence stated that the minority are calling on the Minister responsible for Food and Agriculture and the government at large to redeem it promised of 70% to Ghanaian Cocoa farmers who deserve it for their hard work and not just leave it as a campaign message.
