13% TRAFFIC LIGHTS IN ACCRA ARE SOME WHAT FUNCTIONAL-NASACA

A safety advocacy group calling its self NASACA has released an update of traffic light situation in Accra. 

According to them only 13% of traffic light in Accra are some what functional.

Their findings suggest that, both visitors and Ghanaians are not safe under our traffic light. 

Below is the full statement.

ONLY 13% OF TRAFFIC LIGHTS IN ACCRA ARE SOMEWHAT FUNCTIONAL

…you’re 86% not safe at the traffic lights…

Our 59+ day stretch research revealed that everyone in Accra, resident or visitor is more than 86% not safe at the traffic lights and disturbingly, the statistics get worse by the moment.

In the research tour that saw NASACA visiting around 200 traffic light facilities, we found that only 13% were somehow functioning well.

Around 41% were partially functioning and partially not while the rest, 45 plus % not functioning at all.

This aspect of NASACA WALK FOR SAFETY took place between December 13, 2023 and February 9, 2024.

Cities toured, Accra, Kasoa, Winneba. The rest are Agona Swedru and Koforidua.

173 traffic posts were eventually used for this report and of the number only 23 facilities were in good form at the time.

Note# a damaged traffic light is dangerous but a partially damaged one is deadly, says NASACA.

The research agenda was based on three(3) main findings:

1. Functioning

2. ⁠Out of function

3. ⁠Partial function

We ended up realizing that some were actually;

# ⁠PARTLY OUT OF SIGHT

# INVADED BY 

HAWKERS(hawker invasion), ⁠Etc.

How serious is the issue of improper traffic light facility?

It frustrates the movement of vehicle and pedestrians alike.

Burden traffic wardens with much extra task.

Portrays a clear case of poor maintenance culture among a people.

Mess, such as hawker invasion does expose the PEDESTRIAN to much more danger and forbid the motorist from having a clear view of way. 

To experience the unfortunate scene of selling and buying at the foot of these facilities practically means that we face very weak regulatory systems, if not laws.

The unfortunate development is a testament that the country Ghana faces a load of road traffic burden.

Almost every citizen is concerned about the rate of road carnage, yet, the attitude of the masses interprets otherwise. A bigger worry and/or fear of the research team was where a traffic light system within security health or educational zones face some of these issues.

Burma Camp, Police Academy-Tesano, Odorgonno SHS, 37 Military Hospital, Accra Technical University which is directly opposite TUC head office, police and fire service headquarters along the Ring Road West are examples of this.

It extremely took us by shock to visit collapsed facilities within the enclaves of the acclimated Accra Metropolitan Assembly(A.M.A) head office. What more, next to its doors, trading activities happen on pavements which per “technical architecture”, are reserved for the pedestrian.

In fact, we did BEAR the RISK of this research to alert the road user of the need to be extra vigilant and safety conscious. And for authorities in charge of these facilities to know how dangerous the issues are to up their game in fixing them for improved safety in society.
