The Parliament of Ghana has received a $1.6 million grant from the World Bank and the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office to boost its capacity in economic governance and financial management.

The grant aims to support the effective utilization of resources and promote good governance in the country.

According to Rt Hon Alban Sumana Bagbin, the grant will help strengthen the capacity of key parliamentary committees, improve oversight, and promote transparency and accountability.

The committees that will benefit from the grant include the Economy and Development, Finance, Budget, Public Accounts, and Public Administration and State Interest committees.

These committees will receive training and technical support to enhance their analytical capacity to scrutinize government policies and budgets.

According to the Speaker, the grant is expected to yield several outcomes, including effective utilization of the funds, improved capacity of parliamentary committees, and enhanced transparency and accountability in government spending.

This development is a significant step towards promoting good governance and accountability in Ghana.

Rt Hon Alban Sumana Bagbin also stated that, Parliament is building on the progress made by the 8th Parliament in promoting transparency, accountability, and judicious utilization of resources.

According to Rt Hon Bagbin, the Parliament is taking significant steps to strengthen its capacity to scrutinize and examine economic policies, budgets, and accountability mechanisms.

This includes the creation of new committees and offices, such as the Legal Services and Governance Division and the Public Engagement and Citizens Bureau.

The establishment of 12 new committees is a major milestone in improving accountability and transparency in economic governance. By leveraging a mix of financial skill sets and competences, Parliament aims to ensure prudent utilization of public funds and promote sustainable development.

He added that the international community has taken note of Ghana's progress, and the 9th Parliament's renewed efforts are expected to further enhance the country's reputation for good governance. With these initiatives, Ghana is poised to make significant strides in promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance.
