Health Minister Urges Newly Posted Doctors to Accept Postings as Government Ensures Equitable Distribution

The Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has provided an update on the nationwide posting of newly qualified medical doctors, calling for cooperation and understanding as government works to strengthen healthcare delivery across the country.

Addressing the media at a press briefing, the Minister expressed concern over the low rate of reporting by newly posted medical officers as of Friday. He stressed that government’s policy of deploying doctors to various districts should not be perceived as punishment, but rather as an effort to ensure equitable distribution of the health workforce.

According to him, the postings are targeted at areas where doctors are needed most. He noted with worry that regions such as Upper West and Upper East recorded zero reports from newly posted medical officers as at the latest update.

Hon. Akandoh announced that the Ministry is granting the doctors an additional one week to report to their assigned health facilities. He explained that ongoing engagements are being held with key stakeholders including regional and district ministers, Members of Parliament, District Chief Executives, and traditional authorities to help facilitate the doctors’ smooth integration and stay in their respective districts.

He further stated that government has already begun discussions with the new medical officers to understand their concerns, assuring them that measures will be taken to ensure their comfort and ability to deliver quality healthcare.

The Minister expressed strong confidence that the newly posted doctors will ultimately respond to the call to serve, reaffirming the government's commitment to improving healthcare across the country.
