MP Speaks Out on World Cancer Day: Calls for Increased Investment in Cancer Care

The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North Ewurabena Aubynn has used the occasion of World Cancer Day 2026 to call on the government and stakeholders to increase investment in cancer care and treatment.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, the MP highlighted the growing public health challenge posed by cancer in Ghana, citing statistics that show over 24,000 new cases are recorded annually.

The MP emphasized that cancer is no longer a distant threat, but a reality that affects many families and communities, often with devastating consequences.

She attributed late detection to limited access to screening services, affordability issues, cultural beliefs, and stigma, and called for increased investment in prevention, early detection, and treatment.

The MP commended the government for establishing the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares), which provides financial support for citizens suffering from chronic diseases, including cancer. He urged Parliament to support the Fund and called for decentralization of cancer services, investment in regional cancer centres, and trained health professionals.

"Cancer is a national development issue, not just a health problem," the MP stressed, emphasizing that investing in cancer care is an investment in Ghana's future. He called for unity and collective action to ensure that cancer patients receive the support and care they need.
