Afenyo-Markin Condemns ‘Rambo-Style’ EOCO Arrest of NPP’s Miracle Aboagye, Demands AG Brief Parliament*

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Mr. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has condemned the arrest and detention of some New Patriotic Party executives by the Economic and Organised Crime Office, describing the approach as a “rambo style” operation and a human rights concern.

Speaking through a verbal petition to the Majority Chief Whip on the floor of parliament, Mr. Afenyo-Markin singled out the case of Mr. Miracle Aboagye, Director of Communications for the NPP.

According to the Minority Leader, Mr. Aboagye was picked up at the airport, held for more than three days, and is now being asked to provide property worth about GHS 55 million before he can be released.

“EOCO could have extended an invitation to Miracle Aboagye, why the Rambo style,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin questioned on the floor of Parliament.

He argued that the manner of the arrest sets a worrying precedent for due process and the protection of individual rights, regardless of political affiliation.

Through his petition, the Minority Leader is calling on the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Mr. Dominic Ayine, to appear before the House to brief Members on the activities of EOCO and the circumstances surrounding the recent arrests.

Report filed  by PKB

Mr. Afenyo-Markin said Parliament has a duty to ensure that law enforcement agencies operate within the law while also respecting fundamental freedoms.
