Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin Calls for Comprehensive National Sanitation Policy

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on the Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources to brief Parliament on the government's official national sanitation policy, arguing that Ghana needs a long-term strategy to tackle persistent sanitation challenges and flooding.

Contributing to the debate on the Business Statement in Parliament, Afenyo-Markin criticized the government's decision to declare two days for a nationwide clean-up exercise, describing it as an inadequate response to the country's sanitation crisis.

According to him, while clean-up exercises are important, they do not provide a lasting solution to the recurring problems of poor sanitation and flooding. 

He stressed that Ghana urgently requires a comprehensive and sustainable national sanitation policy backed by clear implementation measures.

The Minority Leader also highlighted the devastating impact of recent floods on thousands of Ghanaians, noting that many victims are ordinary citizens who have lost their homes, businesses, and livelihoods.

He urged the government to demonstrate greater urgency by presenting Parliament and the nation with a concrete and proactive plan to address sanitation and flood management, rather than relying on temporary or reactive interventions.

Afenyo-Markin maintained that a well-defined national sanitation policy is essential to preventing future disasters and protecting lives and property across the country.
