Gov’t to Launch Fresh Biometric SIM Registration to Plug Gaps in Old System- MINISTER The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations is preparing to roll out a brand new biometric SIM registration exercise aimed at fixing loopholes that weakened the last process. The announcement was made by the Minister, Sam Nartey George, when he appeared before Parliament on Wednesday to explain why a fresh registration is needed. Gov’t to Launch Fresh Biometric SIM Registration to Plug Gaps in Old System-

MINISTER 

 

 The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations is preparing to roll out a brand new biometric SIM registration exercise aimed at fixing loopholes that weakened the last process.

 

The announcement was made by the Minister, Sam Nartey George, when he appeared before Parliament on Wednesday to explain why a fresh registration is needed.

 

According to the Minister, while the previous exercise required SIMs to be linked to verified identities, the biometric data collected was not checked in real time against the National Identification Authority database.

 

“As a result, some individuals were able to register SIM cards using false, stolen or unverifiable identities,” Mr. George told MPs.

 

 

 He added that because of this gap, the old exercise did not fully achieve its goal and systemic weaknesses are still undermining the national SIM register.

 

 

 

 He said subscriber records were not verified in real time with the NIA database, making it difficult to build a fully traceable database.

 

Weaknesses in the current system have been exploited for SIM swap fraud, mobile money fraud, identity theft, impersonation, and the sale of pre-registered SIMs.

 

He explained that, 

under the new framework, no SIM card or numbering resource will be activated unless the subscriber’s identity is verified live against the national ID database. 

 

“This will ensure that every active number in Ghana is linked to a verified and traceable identity,” he said.

 

 

The upcoming exercise will introduce:

Real-time electronic biometric verification,  

Self-registration for both physical SIM and e-SIM, Designation of a primary number for authentication  

,Remote SIM de-linking, Device verification through the Central Equipment Identity Register  

Real-time validation of corporate and diplomatic IDs  stronger fraud prevention mechanisms.

 

The Minister said the new _Electronic Communication Numbering Resource Registration_ is designed to close current vulnerabilities, protect customers, and strengthen national security.

*Minority Complaints Baseless, We Are Working – Comfort Doyoe Defends Parliament Recall* The First Deputy Majority Whip and Member of Parliament for Ada, Hon.
