Weija-Gbawe MP Demands Urgent Briefing on 2026 FIFA World Cup Budget and Commonwealth Games Preparations

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has called for the immediate appearance of the relevant ministers before Parliament to address concerns over the cost of Ghana's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the country's preparations for the Commonwealth Games.

Speaking in Parliament, Hon. Shaib said issues surrounding ticketing and the distribution of tickets for upcoming international sporting events require urgent attention and direct accountability from government leadership.

According to him, the concerns are highly time-sensitive, and any delay in providing answers would render the information less relevant to Parliament and the Ghanaian public.

The Weija-Gbawe MP also expressed concern over the apparent lack of coordination regarding Ghana's preparations for the Commonwealth Games. He noted that athletes are yet to receive adequate guidance on critical matters such as funding arrangements, official kits, and other logistical requirements necessary for their participation.

While acknowledging that procedural questions may arise over whether the matters have been formally tabled before the House, Hon. Shaib argued that prolonged delays undermine the purpose of parliamentary oversight and diminish the value of any eventual responses.

He stressed the need for the appropriate ministers to appear before Parliament without further delay to provide clear answers on the cost of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ticket distribution, and the nation's readiness for the Commonwealth Games.

Hon. Shaib maintained that timely ministerial accountability would prevent Parliament from repeatedly debating the same issues and enable Members of Parliament to effectively represent the interests of the Ghanaian people.
