*ACCRA-KUMASI EXPRESSWAY CLEARS 70% OF CORRIDOR, TRAVEL TIME TO DROP TO 2 HOURS*

The government says it has cleared *70%* of the corridor for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, the flagship project under the *Big Push Program*, with the entire route expected to be cleared by the first week of September 2026.

The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, disclosed this while presenting the *Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review of the 2026 Budget* in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, 2026.

"The Accra Kumasi Expressway remains the flagship under the Big Push Program. It involves the construction of one seventy-six kilometer. Six lane by directional expressway. Linking Ghana's two largest commercial cities," stated.

Dr. Forson said the expressway will cut travel time between the two cities to about two hours when completed.

"When completed,  Mr Speaker, the expressway will reduce travel time between Accra and Kumasi to about two hours. 

Improve road safety ease congestion, lower transport costs and feature modern interchanges, bridges, intelligent transport system, electronic towing, emergency response emergency response facilities and restports,"* he told the House.

On progress, the Minister said the *Ghana Armed Forces* have cleared *122 kilometers* of the 120-meter wide right of way in 12 weeks.

"As of twenty-second July twenty-six yesterday the Ghana Armed Forces have cleared one hundred and twenty-two kilometers representing about seventy percent of the one twenty meter wide right of way in just twelve weeks," Dr. Forson said.

He added that the remaining section will be cleared within weeks.

"The entire corridor is expected to be cleared by the first week of September twenty-six," he stated.

 Government has deposited $1.7 billion into a dedicated account for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, with procurement for the main construction contract set to commence in September 2026.

"As of second of July twenty twenty-six, one point seven billion United States dollars have been deposited into a dedicated expressway account at the Bank of Ghana," he stated.

Dr. Forson said technical works on the project are advancing on schedule.

"Environmental studies, engineering design, feasibility works are progressing simultaneously. 

The feasibility study and detail engineer design are expected to be completed by end of August twenty twenty-six next month,"* he told the House.

He added that the next phase of the project will begin immediately after.
