Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga Defends Mid-Year Budget, Challenges Minority's Criticism

The Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has defended the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review, arguing that the government's economic performance should be assessed on the basis of facts rather than political rhetoric.

Responding to criticisms from the Minority, Mr. Ayariga said the Majority had a responsibility to present an objective assessment of the government's performance and would not support attempts to misrepresent the country's economic progress.

He accused the Minority of selectively interpreting the Finance Minister's figures, insisting that improvements in key economic indicators reflected deliberate policy decisions rather than political spin.

The Majority Leader rejected claims that the government's achievements were overstated, maintaining that the administration had taken concrete steps to stabilize the economy and lay the foundation for sustainable growth.

Addressing concerns over public expenditure, Mr. Ayariga acknowledged that delays in payments to contractors had affected several sectors. However, he argued that expenditure management should not be misconstrued as evidence of economic decline, emphasizing that fiscal discipline remained necessary to safeguard macroeconomic stability.

He further contended that the government's fiscal and debt management strategies should be evaluated in the context of broader economic reforms rather than isolated statistics.

Mr. Ayariga concluded that while challenges remain, the Mid-Year Budget demonstrates that the government is making steady progress toward restoring economic stability and creating conditions for long-term growth, urging Parliament to judge the review on evidence rather than partisan interpretation
