IMMIGRATION ASSAULT AT AFLAO: SPEAKER DIRECTS INTERIOR MINISTER TO INVESTIGATE AND REPORT TO PARLIAMENT ON 29TH JULY
The Member of Parliament for Ketu South Constituency, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has expressed worry about physically assault video involving officers of the Ghana Immigration Services and civilian.
The video captured unamed civilian woman, Ms. Abigail Azaledzi, a coconut seller who was assaulted by two gun- wielding immigration officers at the Beat nine area of Aflao border.
" I unequivocally condemn this unprofessional and heinous conduct, no individual, regardless of their position or authority, has the right to inflict such violence upon another citizen. The Ghana Immigration Services, entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding the borders , must uphold the highest standard of conduct and integrity. The action of these officers has not only tamished the reputation of the services but also undermined public trust, " She lamented
In the statement made on the floor of Parliament, the legislature calls on the minister responsible for the interior for immediate suspension from the duty of the officers and conducts an investigation into the circumstances.
She demanded the highest form of accountability from those who serve in positions of responsibility and ensure that the fundamental rights of all citizens are protected and hope that measures will be implemented to prevent such incidents in the future to ensure that the rights and dignity of all individuals are respected.
However, RT.Hon.Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has directed for a comprehensive investigation into the Aflao brutality by the immigration.
He called on the interior minister, Mr Henry Quartey, to immediately act on the statement and report back to the house on 29th July 2024
