NPP GOVERNMENT HAS PERFORMED BETTER - ABENA OSEI ASARE
Hon. Abena Osei-Asare Minister of State at the Finance Ministry commenting on the statement of the Mid-Year Fiscal Policy of the Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the
Government of Ghana for the 2024 Financial Year presented by the minister for Finance Dr . Mohammed Amin Adams has backlashed the minority over government’s mismanagement and also debunked, stating emphatically that the government has performed better and has spent within its limits even in an election year.
She explained that the NPP led administration have been able to reach an agreement with five out of the seven IPPEs to restructure legacy arrears due to the way their power purchase agreements were initially structured by the NDC when they were in government.
She added that, year on a total revenue and grant grows by 24.1 per cent, but there has been total revenue climbing to 74.4 billion Ghana Cedis, coupled with the exceeding of oil tax revenue by 2.1billion Ghana cedis.
However, the ranking member and spokesperson for the minority caucus on finance Mr Isaac Adongo has stated that the budget statement delivered to parliament did not provide any hope to the people of Ghana,it was void of measures that could help elevate the suffering of Ghanaians, but the fact still remains that the dollar was exchanging at almost 16ghc to the cedis.
According to Mr Adongo, diesel was being bought at 15ghc per liter, and the reality still remains that the Akufo Addo led government has taken a litre of diesel to 49 cedis to 51 cedis in recent days. He indicated the NPP administration has mismanaged this economy to register a depreciation in the cedis of about 54% in 2024.
He highlighted that H. E John Dramani Mahama in 2016 managed the economy without printing money from the central bank, yet under the Akufo Addo government, printing of money has been their talk of trade.
He further lamented over the massive unemployment rate among the youth, with government playing on the vulnerability of the youth, moving unemployment from 8% to 14% yet telling them that each will be given mobile phones to be paying 1ghc on a daily basis.
