FIGHT AGAINST GALAMSEY : Local-Based Approach the Best Solution. 

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Atiwa East, Mr. Ernest Owusu Ntim,  emphasizes that a  local-based approach is the best way to combat illegal mining (galamsey) in Ghana.

 Speaking to SATA Radio UK, he advocated for a national dialogue involving all DCEs at mining assemblies to discuss solutions and measures rather than declaring a state of emergency.

 Mr. Owusu Ntim highlighted that supervision and irresponsible mining are Ghana's biggest problems. Even those with legal mining documents can engage in illegal activities without proper oversight.

Documentation Over Military Intervention Instead of deploying military security to mining areas, he suggests proper documentation and record-keeping of miners to track companies violating mining regulations.

Local-Based Approach Success that worked in the district, he cited  Asaman Tafo  a local-based approach to mining worked effectively.

As part of Corporate Social Responsibility for miners in the area, Mr. Owusu Ntim developed a scheme requiring companies to pay 16% of proceeds into a community account for development as part of their corporate social responsibilities.

Lamenting on the need for Accountability, he stressed that accountability to people and the environment is crucial, alongside having the right equipment or licenses.
