Minority Demands Action Against Akim Oda MCE Over Alleged Galamsey Involvement

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, on behalf of the Minority in Parliament, has held a press conference to address allegations of government officials’ involvement in illegal mining activities (galamsey).

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, Hon. Shaib revealed that receipts allegedly issued to some miners by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Akim Oda were questionable. According to him, the supposed receipts were inconsistent with standard financial and administrative procedures.

He explained that one of the miners confirmed no official receipt was provided for payments made, and the MCE’s explanation did not align with acceptable public sector practices.

Hon. Shaib stated that the purpose of the press conference was to urge President John Dramani Mahama to call the Akim Oda MCE to order. He noted that if the President is genuinely committed to fighting illegal mining, then the actions of the MCE directly contradict that commitment.

“The MCE is collecting money from illegal miners and misleading them to believe they are engaged in legitimate mining operations,” he alleged.

He further emphasized that Municipal and District Chief Executives are required to uphold and enforce the law, not break it. “Solomon Brako should not be an exception. He must be held accountable for his actions,” Hon. Shaib stressed.

He therefore called on President Mahama to take swift action against the MCE for Akim Oda, whom he described as one of the individuals fueling the galamsey menace the government claims to be combating.
