Samia Nkrumah, daughter of Ghana's first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has paid a moving tribute to her late father, describing him as a visionary leader whose sacrifices and ideas continue to shape Ghana and Africa.

Speaking at the official launch of the Nkrumah Fest 2026 campaign , Samia reflected on key moments in her father's life and leadership.

She recalled that in the same year her younger brother, Sekou Nkrumah, was born, Dr. Nkrumah launched Ghana's ambitious Seven-Year Development Plan, aimed at accelerating industrialization and ensuring the country could produce what it needed locally.

According to her, that same year Dr. Nkrumah also presented a bold vision for Africa's political and economic unity—a vision she believes remains relevant today.

"If we had embraced that roadmap," she said, "we would not be talking today about the African Continental Free Trade Area or the need to remove barriers between African countries."

Samia also recounted one of the most painful episodes in her father's life—the 1962 assassination attempt at Kulungugu in the Upper East Region. She narrated that a schoolchild presenting Dr. Nkrumah with a bouquet of flowers was killed instantly when it exploded, while her father sustained severe injuries from shrapnel and spent more than a week in hospital.

She revealed that after leaving the hospital, Dr. Nkrumah told her mother that he did not believe he would live long because of the amount of shrapnel lodged in his body.

Sharing the story, Samia emphasized that great achievements often come at a great personal cost.

"Nothing great happens without sacrifice," she told the audience, urging Ghanaians and Africans to draw inspiration from Dr. Nkrumah's dedication to national development and continental unity.

The Nkrumah Fest2026 initiative seeks to rekindle public interest in Dr. Kwame Nkrumah's vision of industrial transformation, self-reliance, and African unity.
