*EOCO Attempted Arrest: Manhyia South MP Breaks Silence, Minority Accuses Government of Intimidation*
The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Hon. Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has recounted his ordeal following an attempted arrest by officials of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) at the Accra High Court premises.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, shortly after the MP, who is counsel for embattled nursing officer Salomey Baffoe Awity, appeared in court for her bail application. Salomey is being held over her alleged links to the controversial "Ghana Jollof" TikTok account.
Speaking to the media at Parliament after fleeing the court premises, Hon. Baffour Awuah described the incident as an attempt to intimidate him for defending his client.
According to the MP, a woman who claimed to be from EOCO approached him and attempted to forcefully take him to the EOCO office.
"If you want me at EOCO why don't you invite me? Then she claims I've been previously invited but I failed to show up and I said that cannot be true," the MP recounted.
He said he offered to drive himself to EOCO in his own vehicle, but the official insisted on forcing him into her vehicle.
"So I said don't worry I'm going to sit in my car I will follow you to EOCO, then she said no she would forcibly take me into their vehicle and drive me to EOCO."
At that point, the MP said he demanded proof of identity and legal authority.
"It was at that point that I inquired from her what even shows you are from EOCO. At that point she couldn't produce any evidence that she was indeed from EOCO. I also wanted to know whether she had an arrest warrant, she also couldn't produce anything," he said.
The Manhyia South legislator said he became convinced it was a kidnapping attempt sponsored by the state.
"It became obvious to me that it was one of the recent kidnappings that have been going on which is sponsored by the state and so at that point I needed to defend and protect myself for the benefit of the good people of Manhyia South who I serve, the Minority, my children and my whole family," he stated.
He said he had to drive to safety to continue defending his client, a mother of three whose four-year-old child is waiting for her release.
"At that point I needed to put myself at a place where I'll be safe so that I could also protect and defend the interest of my client for the benefit of her children, particularly the four-year-old who is waiting for the release of her mother and that is why I had to drive to safety."
