o*Parliament's Education Committee Backs Tax Waiver for Private Schools' Educational Materials* The Chairman for the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education, Mr. Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, says the government can waive taxes on educational materials and equipment for private schools, following appeals from some private university managements. During visits to three private tertiary institutions in Accra, Mr. Nortsu-Kotoe assured private schools in the country of significant government support to complement their services. The Committee visited Wisconsin International University College Ghana, Accra College of Medicine and Regent University College of Science and Technology. Mr. Nortsu-Kotoe told the management of these institutions that the Committee, along with the Ministers of Finance and Education, would work to support the educational policies and strategies of private universities in Ghana. EDUCATION COMMITTEE VISIT SOME SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ACCRA The Assiatant Headmistress Administration of Accra Girls Senior High School, Madam Gladys Lebene Kuetuadu, has highlighted several challenges facing the school, despite its achievements in academic and co-curricular activities. Speaking on behalf of Mrs Gifty Andoh, the Headmistress, on Monday during a Parliamentary Select Committee on Education visit to the school, she emphasised the need for support to address these challenges. The Committee's monitoring visit scheduled from Monday April 28 to Friday May 02 2025 to some selected Senior High Schools and Private Universities in the Greater Accra Region aimed to expose challenges and improve the education sector. Madam Kuetuadu, cited inadequate washroom facilities as a major challenge facing the school. CHEMU SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CALLS FOR BOARDING FACILITIES The Headmistress of Chemu Senior High School, Tema, Mrs Vicentia Kyere Anin-Agyei, has highlighted several challenges facing the school, including accommodation issues for both students and staff. Speaking to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education during a monitoring visit on Monday, she emphasised the need for a boarding facility to enhance academic progress, particularly for students commuting from outside the Tema enclave. "We have students who come from far and wide, and as a day school, we really need a boarding facility to support their academic progress," she said. This challenge was underscored by the case of three students who became pregnant while cohabiting due to long commuting distances. The three students wrote the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) last year, the headmistress revealed. MP CONDEMNS DISMISSAL OF CEO FOR TAMALE TEACHING HOSPITAL. A minority member of the health committee and mp for Akyim Oda, Hon, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has said that the dismissal of the CEO of Tamale Teaching Hospital Dr Atiku Adam is unacceptable and must be condemned. He said that, Dr Adam was lawfully approved by the board of the hospital therefore, the minister for health Mr Kwabena Mintah Akando can not just sack him with mere words. Speaking during the committee's monitoring of Regional hospitals nationwide, he demanded that the CEO must be reinstated. Meanwhile, Hon. Dr. Thomas Anaba insisted they should wait for the details before accusing the Minister’s action.

Addressing the thirteen association trader's leadership, the minority leader Mr Alexander Kwamena Afenyo Markin appealed to banks that have loaned the affected victims to reduce their interest rates to ease their burden. The Minority Whip Mr Frank Annor Dompreh reacting to his victory in the court case challenging his win in the 2024 election advised the National Democratic Party not to destroy pink sheet if they claimed they have won an election. According to him, the NDC claimed they had won when they could not prove with their pink sheet in the court room. MINORITY PROMISES TO SUPPORT SOLUTIONS TO BRING FINALITY TO BAWKU CRISIS. The minority has promised to support solutions that will bring finality to the Bawku crisis. Speaking to the media, the Deputy Ranking on the defence and interior committee, Mr Kofi Amankwa-Manu commented on some reportage circulating on the social media which indicates that, the inspector General of Police, COP Christian Tetteh-Yohunu promising the youth of Bawku to lay down their tools in exchange of recruitment into the police service. MINORITY CHARGES GOVERNMENT TO RESTORE CALM IN BAWKU. The minority in parliament has condemned the current violence ongoing in Bawku and has called on the government to restore calm and peace in the area. Addressing the press, the ranking member for the Defence and Interior committee, Rev John Ntim Fordjour called on the government to demonstrate greater urgency and decisiveness as the deteriorating situation in Bawku is a national concern. He said the government must take immediate action to prevent further escalation. The recent development from the area indicates attacks on bus and setting ablaze of the residence of Hon Mahama Ayariga the current Majority Leader in parliament and Hon Laadi Ayii Ayamba who comes from Pusiga.
