UK INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT MINISTER PAYS COURTESY CALL TO GHANA'S PARLIAMENT. The Minister for International Development of United Kingdom Baroness Chapman has paid a courtesy call to Ghana's Parliament. The Rt Hon Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin speaker of parliament chaired a discussion forum which focused on the UK’s longstanding partnership with the Parliament of Ghana, as well as opportunities to deepen collaboration following the June 2025 launch of a new technical support programme funded by the UK and delivered through the World Bank. The discussions also explored opportunities for the UK-World Bank Parliamentary project to support enhanced engagement between elected officials, expert agencies and civil society, including through the Parliamentary Citizens’ Bureau. *Minority Caucus Condemns Persecution, Calls for Protection of Dissenting Voices* The Minority Caucus has expressed grave concern over the arrest and remand of Mr. Kwame Baffoe, Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), on charges of "offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace." The Caucus sees this as part of a broader pattern of suppressing dissent and harassing journalists, social commentators, and opposition figures through arbitrary arrests and detentions. In a statement signed by the Minority Second Deputy Whip, Mr Jerry Ahmed Shaib stated that, the Caucus believes that the government's actions are aimed at silencing voices of dissent and accountability. He highlighted that the government's neglect of urgent national crises, such as the communal violence in northern Ghana, which has claimed lives and displaced thousands. MINORITY LEADER PAYS FEES FOR VORSA STUDENT AT UNIVERSITY OF GHANA- LEGON. The minority leader, Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo Markin has paid the fees for 33 students from the Volta Region who are members of the Volta Regional Students Association (VORSA),at University of Ghana, Legon, amounting to GHC 105,000. Meeting with the students, he encouraged them to take their studies seriously, remain disciplined, and commit themselves to excellence so they can become responsible citizens and contribute meaningfully to national development. The member of parliament for Effutu encouraged them by sharing his life experience, particularly during his time at the university. He mentioned challenges with fees, having to work part time jobs to support himself and struggles of others who came from difficult backgrounds. *ABOSSEY OKAI SPARE PARTS DEALERS ASSOCIATION TO ENFORCE GIPC ACT* The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association announces its commitment to upholding the law and protecting local enterprise from unlawful competition. As of Monday, September 8, 2025, the Association will embark on an exercise to ensure strict compliance with the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act, 2013 (Act 865), specifically Section 27(1). According to their press statement, the Act prohibits non-citizens or enterprises not wholly owned by Ghanaians from engaging in retail trading, hawking, or selling goods in stalls or markets. Answering questions from the Public Account Committee in parliament Mr Anthony Kwesi Sarpong said these institutions claim that their inability to honor their tax obligations is a result of insufficient funds. Cash Flow Issues. State institutions cite cash flow problems as the primary reason for their inability to pay taxes.
