Ghana has been chosen to host the 2026 African Athletics Senior Championships, a decision made official by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) during a council meeting in Douala, Cameroon.

The announcement comes as a significant achievement for the nation, further solidifying its status as a leading destination for major sporting events on the continent. This decision was reached after a voting process in which Ghana triumphed over Botswana by garnering 12 votes to Botswana’s 3.

Recent successes in organising large-scale events, such as the African Games held in Accra, have bolstered Ghana’s reputation in the international sports community. The seamless execution of the African Games showcased Ghana’s capability to host high-profile events, likely contributing to the confidence exhibited by the CAA council in their decision. The upcoming championship is expected to bring together top athletes from across the African continent, promising a display of exceptional talent and sportsmanship.

The bid to host the championship was spearheaded by a dedicated team from Ghana Athletics, including Mr. Majid Bawa of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Fuseini Bawah, and Charles Osei Asibey. Their efforts were instrumental in presenting a compelling case for Ghana, emphasising the country’s readiness and enthusiasm to welcome the continent’s best athletes. The successful bid underscores the team’s commitment to promoting athletics and enhancing Ghana’s standing in the realm of international sports.

Hosting the 2026 African Athletics Senior Championships is anticipated to have significant economic and social benefits for Ghana. The influx of athletes, officials, and spectators will likely boost local businesses, hospitality, and tourism sectors.

Additionally, the event will provide an opportunity to further develop sports infrastructure and inspire young athletes across the nation. The championship will also serve as a platform to foster unity and cultural exchange among African nations..
