THE PARLIAMENTARY SELECT COMMITTEE ON ENERGY ENGAGES WITH KEY AGENCIES UNDER THE MINISTRY OF ENERGY

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, has raised serious concerns about an impending nationwide power shutdown, revealing that the country is struggling to find GH¢1.1 billion to purchase liquid fuel needed for electricity generation. The Minister disclosed that, the country currently has less than three days

' worth of liquid fuel in stock. Although further fuel supplies have been ordered, the funds required to pay for these supplies are unavailable, threatening the power sector with a major crisis if no immediate solution is found.

This warning came during a critical meeting at the Peduase Valley Resort, where the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy met with key agencies such as the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), and the Energy Commission. The meeting was convened to review the agencies' planned activities for 2025 and ensure they align with national energy policies, including the Renewable Energy Master Plan. One of the meeting’s key objectives wasto prevent duplication of efforts and conflicting strategies, aiming for a more unified approach to energy management and transition across the country.

Minister Jinapor emphasized that urgent action was needed at the Cabinet level to secure the necessary funds. He expressed his desperation to ensure the financial resources are mobilized to prevent a total collapse of the energy sector. He warned that the country's energy debt could soar to GH¢30 billion by the end of 2025 if the current financial instability persists.

The Committee on Energy, which is responsible for overseeing energy-related ministries and agencies, has pledged to continue monitoring the situation closely and support efforts to resolve the crisis to prevent a national blackout.
