MP Calls for Stronger Public Health Measures and Insurance Support After Floods

The Member of Parliament, Hon. Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, has called for urgent public health interventions and stronger economic protection for market women following recent flooding, warning that the aftermath of such disasters extends far beyond the immediate loss of lives and property.

Speaking in Parliament, Hon. Ibrahimah said while national attention often focuses on the destruction caused by floods, the long-term public health and economic consequences are frequently overlooked.

She recounted the story of a market woman whose stock of smoked fish was contaminated by floodwaters. According to the MP, the woman, having lost her source of income, intended to dry the fish in the sun and resell it in an effort to recover her capital.

Hon. Ibrahimah said the incident underscores the serious public health risks that can emerge after flooding, as financial hardship may compel affected traders to take desperate measures that could endanger consumers.

She therefore called on the relevant authorities to activate Ghana's public health surveillance systems immediately after major floods to monitor food safety, prevent the sale of contaminated products, and reduce the risk of disease outbreaks.

The MP also advocated the introduction of business insurance schemes specifically designed for market women and small-scale traders. She noted that many traders operate without financial protection, leaving them vulnerable to total economic loss whenever disasters strike.

According to Hon. Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, providing effective institutional safety nets would not only protect livelihoods but also reduce the likelihood of public health risks arising from economic desperation in the aftermath of environmental disasters.

She urged the government and relevant stakeholders to strengthen disaster response strategies by giving equal attention to public health protection and economic recovery, particularly for vulnerable traders and communities affected by floods.
