The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam George, has announced regulatory actions against non-compliant FM radio stations in Ghana.

According to the Minister, a thorough audit has revealed several FM stations operating outside the bounds of the law.

The Minister explained that the non-compliant stations have been categorized into four groups.

These include 28 stations operating with expired authorizations, 14 stations facing revocation for failure to establish operations, 13 stations with unpaid fees despite provisional authorizations, and 7 stations that have paid provisional fees but haven't met technical requirements.

However, in a surprise move, President Mahama has directed the Ministry and the National Communications Authority to grant a 30-day grace period for the defaulting stations to correct their breaches.

Stations that fail to comply within this period will face formal revocation of their authorizations.

Notably, the current government has waived applicable fines for defaulting entities, a departure from the previous administration's approach.

He said This initiative aims to ensure compliance with broadcasting regulations while providing an opportunity for stations to rectify their status.

The Minister emphasized the government's commitment to fair enforcement and support for the broadcasting industry.

The 30-day grace period begins immediately, and affected stations are expected to take immediate action to regularize their operations.

Hon. Sam George, also emphasized the importance of upholding the law and setting a high standard for conduct, leading by example.

According to the minister, the Ministry and regulator are committed to fairness and impartiality, regardless of ethnic, religious, political, or social affiliation.

He expressed willingness to provide transparency by naming the affected stations for the record.
