*316 Suspected, 107 Confirmed COVID-19 Cases at University of Ghana*

A recent COVID-19 outbreak at the University of Ghana has resulted in 316 suspected cases, with 107 confirmed cases reported. Fortunately, there are no hospitalizations and no deaths. The outbreak is currently limited to the University of Ghana community and has not spread widely to other parts of the country.

According to the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, a recent hall celebration on campus contributed to the spread, where large crowds gathered with inadequate use of face masks and physical distancing. To contain the outbreak, a national team was sent to work with university and municipal health authorities.

*Measures Implemented*

The university has taken several measures to prevent further spread, including:

- Suspension of all hall activities

- Campus-wide education campaign using posters, campus radio, and student leaders to educate students on COVID-19 safety protocols

- Collaboration with health authorities, including the Ghana Health Service and the School of Public Health, to contain the outbreak

According to the Health Minister, the Ghana Health Service has been conducting surveillance and testing for COVID-19 and has issued a public health advisory, urging individuals to report any COVID-19-related symptoms to the nearest health facility.

He said the situation is being closely monitored, and health officials are working to prevent further spread of the virus.

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced measures to protect vulnerable populations and manage COVID-19 cases in Ghana.

According to the Minister, the government is securing COVID-19 vaccinations to protect vulnerable populations, particularly those with underlying medical conditions and the aged.

The Minister also highlighted the availability of antiviral medication, Paxlovid, for patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 who have co-morbidities like diabetes and hypertension. Treatment is based on symptoms, with most people recovering at home, while more serious cases require hospital care, including oxygen therapy.
