*Controller and Accountant General's Department Responds to Public Debt Overstatement Claims*

 

The Controller and Accountant General's Department has refuted allegations of overstating Ghana's public debt by GH¢138.91 billion.

 

 According to the Auditor-General's report, the department's Whole of Government Accounts showed a total public debt of GH¢861.4 billion, whereas the Ministry of Finance recorded a lower figure of GH¢737.17 billion.

 

 

Mr Kwasi Agyei, who is with the  Controller and Accountant General, appeared before the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament to provide clarification on the matter. 

 

Mrs Abena Osei Asare, Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, described the overstatement as "no ordinary mistake" and emphasized the need for rigorous accountability and transparency in public financial management.

 

The Auditor-General has recommended a comprehensive reconciliation between the Controller and Accountant-General's Department and the Ministry of Finance to address the overstatements and omissions. 

 

The Public Accounts Committee is set to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure implementation of the Auditor-General's recommendations.
