Afenyo-Markin Emphasizes Collective Action Against Illegal Mining. Minority leader, Mr Alexander Kwamena Afenyo Markin has emphasized the need for political leaders to put aside partisan differences and work together to address the issue of galamsey (illegal mining). Afenyo-Markin Emphasizes Collective Action Against Illegal Mining.

 

Minority leader, Mr Alexander Kwamena Afenyo Markin has emphasized the need for political leaders to put aside partisan differences and work together to address the issue of galamsey (illegal mining). 

 

 

Contributing to a communication from the speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Bagbin condemning the action of the member of parliament for Asutifi North Mr Ebenezer Kwaku Agyemang on an alleged galamsey issue, Mr Afenyo Markin stressed that galamsey is a critical issue that affects the nation as a whole, including the economy, environment, and public health.

 

 

He  recalls raising concerns about galamsey as far back as 2015, and notes that the issue has been ignored for too long.

 

The Effutu legislature urged political leaders to take a bipartisan approach to addressing galamsey, and to prioritize the country's interests over partisan politics.

 

However, The majority leader Mahama Ayariga emphasized that members of parliament are not above the law and are willing to cooperate with law enforcement agencies when allegations of wrongdoing are made. 

 

He explained that the MP for Asutifi North was invited by the CID for questioning. 

 

He assured the MP is willing to cooperate with the law enforcement agencies to clear his name. 

 

Also the Asutifi North MP was given a bail of 150,000 with one surety.
