Bolgatanga Central MP Defends Budget Allocations, Says Parliament’s Funding Challenges Cannot Be Solved in One Year

The Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Hon. Isaac Adongo, has defended the current parliamentary budget allocations, emphasizing that Parliament’s financial challenges cannot be resolved within a single fiscal year.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Hon. Adongo argued that if previous governments had steadily improved funding to Parliament, the House would not be facing the current debate over inadequate allocations. He noted that in 2024, when the budget was presented by a Minister who was also a Member of Parliament under the previous administration, there was little concern expressed about Parliament’s financial needs.

He described the current criticisms as inconsistent, adding that Parliament has always required substantial resources to operate effectively.

Addressing claims made by the Minority regarding helicopter purchases, Hon. Adongo stated that the accusations were based on misleading information. He clarified that the helicopters in question are not being paid for entirely from the 2025 budget. According to him, the first tranche of payments covers the period from 2025 to 2028.

He stressed that these payments cannot be used as justification for complaints about allocations for 2026. Instead, he said it appears some MPs are missing the focus of the debate and consistently shifting discussions toward private jets, which were not under consideration.

Hon. Adongo further noted that no borrowing is being done to acquire the helicopters, stating that payments are being made from Ghana’s own resources. He contrasted the current situation with previous years when governments borrowed up to $3 billion annually, yet failed to adequately fund Parliament.

He concluded that the Minority cannot now claim to care more about Parliament’s welfare than those currently working to strengthen the institution, adding that the Majority cannot allow attempts to divert the budget debate into unrelated issues such as defence

spending or allocations to the Ministry of Education.
