Minority Leader Urges Greater Parliamentary Inclusivity Ahead of Next Session The Minority Leader, Hon. Minority Leader Urges Greater Parliamentary Inclusivity Ahead of Next Session

The Minority Leader, Hon. Alexander Osahene Kwamena Afenyo Markin, has called on the Majority to adopt a more accommodating approach in the upcoming parliamentary session. Speaking to the media, he emphasized that the Minority expects the Speaker of Parliament to admit more of their motions and allow them greater opportunity for advocacy.

Hon. Afenyo Markin expressed frustration over previous sessions, citing delays and rejections of motions as a key challenge. “In the past, when we filed motions, they were often declined, delayed, or handled at the last minute,” he said. He pointed to the motion of the Chief Justice’s nomination as a notable example. “We filed it on time and intended to discuss it on the House floor. But over two weeks later, on a Friday at midnight, we were informed that our motion had been rejected ahead of Monday’s vetting,” he recalled.

He further explained that attempts to address issues during vetting were met with procedural tactics by the Majority, including points of order. “It’s all part of politics. The Majority has its strategies, and the Minority has ours,” he added.

Hon. Afenyo Markin stressed that parliamentary politics should ensure that all parties and stakeholders have fair opportunities to contribute. “The essence of Parliament is inclusivity and engagement. We look forward to more constructive participation in the next session,” he said.

The Minority Leader’s comments highlight ongoing tensions between the Majority and Minority, but also signal a push for a more transparent and collaborative parliamentary process in the 4th Republic.
