Government Blasts Minority Over Cocoa Sector Challenges, Says Party Created Problems It's Trying to Fix. The government has hit back at the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) over criticisms of its handling of the cocoa sector, saying the party's claims are baseless and hypocritical. In a statement signed by member of parliament for Amenfi West, Mr Eric Afful, noted that the NPP's tenure from 2021-2024 was marked by mismanagement of the sector, leading to the current challenges faced by cocoa farmers. According to the chairman for Economy and Development committee, the NPP's government took a syndication facility of $800 million for cocoa purchases in the 2023-2024 crop year but failed to deliver 333,000 metric tonnes of cocoa, with the money unaccounted for in COCOBOD's books.

This led to a loss of credibility, making it difficult for the current government to secure syndication for the 2024/2025 crop year.

He added that,  the  government has taken steps to revamp the sector, including providing free fertilizer to cocoa farmers, finding alternative funding for cocoa purchases, and implementing a cocoa rehabilitation program to boost production.

The government is also paying farmers 70% of the world market price and gradually delivering the 333,000 metric tonnes of cocoa left undelivered by the NPP.

Mr Afful questioned the NPP's moral authority to criticize the government, saying it was the party's mismanagement that created the problems it's now trying to fix.
