MINORITY SLAMS GOVERNMENT OVER ABANDONED BOANKRA INLAND PORT PROJECT

The Minority in Parliament has accused the government of abandoning the Boankra Inland Port project, a move they claim is driven by partisan and regional considerations rather than national interest.

Addressing a press conference, Hon Kennedy Osei Nyarko, Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru and Ranking Member on Roads and Transport Committee, questioned why a project with immense potential for job creation, trade facilitation, and regional integration was being allowed to stagnate.

"If decisions are being influenced by the perception that the project primarily benefits the Ashanti region, then that's a fundamentally flawed approach," he said. "National infrastructure must be viewed through the lens of collective benefits, not partisan or regional considerations."

Hon Osei Nyarko alleged that the government's claim of investigating the project is a mere excuse, pointing out that there is little evidence of any investigation taking place on the ground.

The Boankra Inland Port project, which was near completion, has been left abandoned, denying young people employment and economic opportunities. The Minority is calling for the government to revive the project and ensure its completion.

Hon Osei Nyarko noted that the project's abandonment is a significant setback, particularly as it was poised to create decent and sustainable jobs for young Ghanaians, especially in the Ashanti region.

He cited paragraph 623 of the 2025 budget, where the government committed to completing the project, but lamented that the reality on the ground tells a different story, with millions of dollars in public investment lying idle.

The Boankra Inland Port is a strategic logistic hub designed to facilitate the movement of goods and open up critical economic corridors to neighboring countries, including Burkina Faso. The project's suspension undermines regional trade integration and Ghana's position as a strategic transit and logistics gateway in the sub-region.
