Minority Demands Accountability Over World Cup Ticket Allocation and Visa Sponsorships

The Minority in Parliament has called on the Ministry of Youth and Sports to provide a full account of ticket allocations, visa sponsorships, and corporate donations related to Ghana's participation in the upcoming global football tournament.

Addressing journalists in Parliament, the Minority expressed concern over what it described as a lack of transparency and fairness in the management of travel arrangements and sponsorship opportunities ahead of the tournament, which begins in two days. Ghana's national team, the Black Stars, is scheduled to play its opening match on June 17.

According to the Minority, opposition Members of Parliament have allegedly been excluded from the allocation of travel slots despite Parliament's composition of 276 members. The group further claimed that members on the Majority side have been allocated two slots each for individuals within their constituencies, while District Chief Executives (DCEs) have reportedly received three slots each.

The opposition also raised concerns about an ongoing screening exercise at Boteyman, where prospective travelers are being vetted for sponsorship opportunities. They alleged that several applicants have faced visa denials due to poor coordination and inadequate screening procedures.

The Minority further cited reports from Ghana's diplomatic mission in Canada, where the Ghanaian Ambassador is said to be compiling a list of Ghanaian residents in Ottawa to support the Black Stars during their match against Panama in Toronto.

Questioning the financial arrangements surrounding the initiative, the Minority demanded answers from the Minister for Youth and Sports regarding the number of tickets being distributed, the source of funding, and who is responsible for covering visa processing fees estimated at $185 per applicant.

The opposition also called for disclosure of funds raised through corporate donations and sponsorships intended to support Ghana's participation in the tournament. "We know that an amount of money was realized through donations made to the Ministry of Youth and Sports to sponsor supporters. Ghanaians deserve to know how much was raised and how the funds are being utilized," the spokesperson stated.

The Minority maintained that Parliament remains the appropriate platform for such accountability and urged the Minister to appear before the House immediately to clarify what it described as conflicting information from the Presidency and the Sports Ministry.

With the tournament fast approaching, the opposition insists that transparency and accountability are essential to protecting Ghana's reputation and ensuring public confidence in the management of resources connected to the Black Stars' campaign.
