The 18-year-old King, Asantehene Agyeman Prempeh I at his private residence in the Elmina Castle, waiting to cross the ocean to Seychelles Island.
He did this to avoid the Asante-British war that would have happened in 1896 for refusing to submit Asante sovereignty to the Whiteman and also refusing to pay 50,000 ounces of gold to the British.
The only penalty to avoid this war was to submit himself, his mother Asantehemaa Nana Yaa Akyia, his Amanhene and Abrempon which include; Mamponghene, Offinsohene, Edwesohene (Ejisu), Bantamahene, Asafohene, Akyempemhene, Oyokohene etc.
Remember Sir Garnet Wolseley and troops had previously burnt down Kumasi with explosives in 1874 (Sagrenti War). So further attempts by King Prempeh would have resulted in chaos. So he chose to sacrifice himself, his mother, Amanhene and Abrempong, and their households to save the impending danger.
128 years later, the second-largest state-of-the-art International airport in Ghana will be named after King Prempeh I. The Sacrificial Lamb, well deserved.
