GOVT TO INCREASE FUNDING FOR PRISON FEEDING FROM GHC 1.80 TO GHC 5. The government of Ghana through the interior minister,Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed - Mubarak and the Finance Ministry has allocated 40million Ghana cedis for prison feeding. With a proposal to increase the daily feeding allowance from GHC 1.8 to GHC 5 Ghana cedis per inmate. GOVT TO INCREASE FUNDING FOR PRISON FEEDING FROM GHC 1.80 TO GHC 5. 

 

 

The government of Ghana through the interior minister,Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed - Mubarak and the Finance Ministry has allocated 40million Ghana cedis for prison feeding. 

 

With a proposal to increase the daily feeding allowance from GHC 1.8 to GHC 5 Ghana cedis per inmate. 

 

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee of parliament  on 30th September 2025,  Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed said the Ghana Prisons Service is working to improve the welfare of inmates and address congestion in prison. 

 

The prison service granted amnesty to over nine hundred (900) first time offenders reducing congestion from 36% to 33%. 

 

He added that, Agricultural initiatives by the ministry to cultivate land and produce food for inmates, reducing reliance on government funding. 

 

He further explained that the Service is setting up industries within prisons to engage inmates in productive activities such as furniture-making, sanitary pad production and uniform manufacturing. 

 

Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak concluded that, these initiatives aim to improve the living conditions of inmates, reduce recidivism and promote rehabilitation.

 

However, the Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Mrs Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq) added that, she has introduced the directorate -general kitchen support project where establishing gardens, fish ponds and poultry farms in prisons to provide fresh produce and protein. 

 

She also spoke on partnership with churches and other organizations to support prison feeding programs.

 

Mrs Baffoe-Bonnie added that they are working to ensure that the approved funding is released to support prison feeding and are hopeful the price of feeding increases to GHC 20 by the year 2026.
