MINORITY SLAMS GOVERNMENT 's ATTEMPT TO UNDERMINE JUDICIAL INDEPENDENCE 

 

Deputy Minority Leader, Madam Patricia Appiagyei has today expressed deep concern about the state of governance in Ghana, highlighting several key issues

 

Delivering the Minority's Welcome address after Parliament Reconvenes, she emphasizes the constitutional duty of MPs to serve with honor, vigilance, and integrity.

 

The Asokwa Member of Parliament criticized the John Dramani Mahama's government for seeming indifferent to public distress, insecurity, and institutional decay.

 

 

The Minority specifically addressed the perceived threat to the independence of the judiciary, mentioning an "audacious attempt" by the presidency to undermine it.

 

 References the controversy surrounding efforts to remove the Chief Justice, she framed it as an attack on the judiciary's sanctity.

 

She stated that the President's attempt to influence the Supreme Court by nominating loyalists, potentially undermining the judiciary's independence.

Parliamentary Committee Ramps Up Efforts on Sanitation The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources Mr John Oti Bless who also doubles as member of parliament for Nkwanta North has reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to addressing sanitation challenges across Ghana. This comes after monitoring visits to several Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to assess sanitation efforts. In a meeting with the Ghana Environmental Health Officers Association, key concerns were raised, including calls to reinstate uniforms for officers to enhance their visibility and authority, and to enforce sanitation bylaws more effectively. The Chairperson also urged the media to support sanitation campaigns and announced upcoming public hearings to engage MMDAs and service providers. Emphasizing collaboration, the Chairperson noted that collective action is vital in the fight against poor sanitation.

MINORITY CALLS FOR RESIGNATION OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS MINISTER OVER CLOSURE OF EMBASSY The minority caucus in parliament is calling for immediate resignation of the Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa over the closure of Ghana's embassy in Washington. Giving her welcome remarks on the floor of parliament, the deputy Minority leader Mrs Patricia Appiagyei said the decision by the Ministry is deeply regrettable. " The embassy in Washington DC is not a district office of a private company. It is a sovereign outpost of the Republic of Ghana" she lamented. According to her, the embassy represents the face of Ghana and to shutter it abruptly because of a single staff member caught engaging in criminal and corrupt behavior is unacceptable. She explained that criminal behavior and conduct could be prosecuted without disrupting diplomatic operations. PARLIAMENTARY SELECT COMMITTEE ON HUMAN RIGHTS ENGAGES CHRAJ, GPS The Parliamentary Select Committee on Human Rights has met with officials from the Ghana Prisons Service and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to monitor the government’s compliance with human rights standards and also gain insights into the operations of the institutions. The Committee aims to identify areas where support is needed to improve the living conditions of inmates at various prisons and further provide assistance to CHRAJ where necessary. At a session with the officials from the Prisons Service, the Director-General of Prisons, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (ESQ.), and her team emphasised the urgent need for government support to adequately care for inmates.
