PARLIAMENTARY SELECT COMMITTEE ON HUMAN RIGHTS ENGAGES CHRAJ, GPS The Parliamentary Select Committee on Human Rights has met with officials from the Ghana Prisons Service and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to monitor the government’s compliance with human rights standards and also gain insights into the operations of the institutions. The Committee aims to identify areas where support is needed to improve the living conditions of inmates at various prisons and further provide assistance to CHRAJ where necessary. At a session with the officials from the Prisons Service, the Director-General of Prisons, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (ESQ.), and her team emphasised the urgent need for government support to adequately care for inmates. Additionally, the pressing issue of sanitation, which is of great concern, was highlighted. Suggestions were made for the creation of NHIA cards specifically for inmates, which would be useful during their detention period. M

Minority Caucus in parliament has raised the alarming state of Ghana's power sector and charges the NDC government and the energy minister Mr John Jinapor to stop the talking and fix the lights before the 24 hour economy becomes a 24 hour blackout. Addressing a press conference held in Accra, the ranking member of the energy committee, Mr. George Kwame Aboagye, also the MP for Asene-Akroso-Manso. described the current power outages as “a national emergency” and condemned what they called the government’s persistent “lack of honesty, poor planning, and administrative failure” in the energy sector. John Abdulai Jinapor, has raised serious concerns about an impending nationwide power shutdown, revealing that the country is struggling to find GH¢1.1 billion to purchase liquid fuel needed for electricity generation. The Minister disclosed that, the country currently has less than three days ' worth of liquid fuel in stock. Although further fuel supplies have been ordered, the funds required to pay for these supplies are unavailable, threatening the power sector with a major crisis if no immediate solution is found. POLICE ARREST FIVE SUSPECTS INVOLVED IN ARMED ROBBERY CASES IN THE ASHANTI REGION The Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) in the Ashanti Region wishes to inform the public about a recent breakthrough in the fight against armed robbery in the Denchemuoso District. Following a series of robbery incidents in the area, on 22nd April 2025, PID/Ashanti operatives, acting on credible intelligence, apprehended one Michael Owusu Ansah, alias Baby Last, aged 32. The suspect had been on the police wanted list since 2016 in connection with a robbery and the murder of Police Officer G/Cpl Frank Essel of SWAT/Ashanti, which occurred at the Open Space Hotel in Denchemuoso on 19th May 2016. During interrogation, the suspect confessed to engaging in multiple street and residential robberies in Denchemuoso, Atwima-Techiman, Asuoyeboah, and surrounding areas. WE ARE NOW WELL INFORMED ON CHALLENGES IN YEA AGREEMENTS AND MMDCEs - OTI BLESS The chairman on sanitation and water resources committee who doubles as MP for Nkwanta north, Mr John Kwabena Oti Bless has said, his committee has been properly briefed on challenges confronting the Youth Employment Agency ( YEA ) agreement and the MMDCEs after the committee's engagement with the leadership of the YEA today Tuesday 13 May, 2025. He explained that, during the committee's verification and monitoring visits to MMDCEs, few issues came up concerning the YEA model and the various MMDCEs for which the committee decided to engage the leadership of YEA for better appreciation of those challenges and also help the committee to prepare a very comprehensive and detailed report to Parliament.
